How Can You Tell When It Is Time To Lose Weight?
Are you one of the many millions of people who look in the mirror every day and say to themselves “I have got to lose some weight”? Just about everyone has done this at some point and in a lot of cases you do indeed need to lose some weight. This is not however always necessary and so how can you tell whether you really should lose some weight?
A major problem with weight gain is that it often seems to arrive when you are not looking and this is increasingly being seen particularly in countries such as the US where obesity has now become an epidemic. Because your weight usually increases only slowly over many months, you frequently simply do not notice the increase as far as changes in your looks are concerned and are only conscious of it when you step onto the bathroom scales. Therefore, it is a good idea to get yourself into the habit of checking your weight regularly (roughly once each month is generally sufficient) and if you see that it has increased appreciably then it is time to lose that excess weight.
There are differences of opinion about exactly what constitutes obesity but for our purposes here if your weight has risen by in excess of about thirty pounds or so then you are in all probability heading towards obesity and a myriad of associated health problems.
Another sign that you probably ought to to lose weight is when a friend remarks that you are overweight. Now you could well be offended when a friend informs you that you need to lose some weight but bear in mind that they probably found it hard to find the courage to say something to you and are also more likely than not demonstrating a very real concern about your health, rather than passing a comment about how you look.
Another sign that you have put on too much weight is when you begin having difficulty with normally simple tasks like climbing the stairs or running to catch a bus and discover that you are getting out of breath all too quickly. Of course this will not necessarily be the result of being overweight and can be caused by other medical problems, but you would be surprised at just how often the cause is indeed weight. When this happens your body is starting to ring its alarm bells and these should not be ignored.
A final and very simple, but often ignored, indication that you are gaining weight is simply discovering that your clothes do not fit as they used to. A slightly tight waistband after Christmas is not unusual for a lot of us but when it continues to get tighter and tighter and you find yourself buying bigger and bigger sizes every time you shop then the time has come to go on a diet before your waist stretches not only your clothes but also your credit card too much.
These are of course just a small number of examples of the many signs that you are overweight to the point at which you need to take some corrective action. Excess weight has a habit of creeping up on you gradually and it is all too easy to simply not notice it at all. However the secret to looking and feeling good is quite simple – know what your ideal weight should be and jump on the scales regularly to ensure that you are not putting on too much weight.
Obesity, and particularly teenage obesity, these days is a growing problem and one which can lead to serious medical complications. It is also wise therefore to learn how to calculate BMI which is the medical indicator for obesity.
